Hempstead Town Board to Hear Proposed Parking, Stop and Tow-Away Changes

The Hempstead Town Board is scheduled to hold public hearings Tuesday, Aug. 4, on proposed parking, traffic, school-area and tow-away code changes affecting parts of Uniondale, Wantagh, East Rockaway, Franklin Square and Point Lookout.

The hearings are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the Town Meeting Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall, 1 Washington Street, Hempstead. The measures remain proposals and are not confirmed enacted rules.

Uniondale parking proposals

One proposed local law would add an overnight parking restriction on the north side of Pembroke Street in Uniondale. The proposed restriction would prohibit parking from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on an 89-foot section beginning 30 feet west of Arcadia Avenue.

A separate proposal would repeal the existing school-area restriction on that same section of Pembroke Street. The current code language prohibits parking from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on school days. The Town Board is considering both the repeal of that provision and the proposed overnight restriction, but neither change takes effect unless the town completes the required legal action.

The board is also considering revised parking and stopping rules in Uniondale and Wantagh. In Uniondale, the proposal would establish a 172-foot no-parking-anytime section on the west side of Gilroy Avenue and a separate 37-foot no-parking-anytime section on the east side. It would also add a 45-foot no-stopping-here-to-corner area and a 61-foot no-parking-anytime area on the south side of Braxton Street near Uniondale Avenue.

In Wantagh, the proposal concerns a 51-foot section of the west side of Cypress Street beginning 262 feet north of Merrick Road. The proposal would repeal a shorter 17-foot restriction adopted Sept. 17, 2024.

Proposed arterial stops

The Town Board will also consider proposed arterial stop requirements in East Rockaway and Franklin Square. Under the proposed wording, northbound and southbound traffic on Rhame Avenue would stop at Lawrence Street. Southbound traffic on Jefferson Street would stop at Tyler Street.

Those requirements are proposed additions to the town code. Drivers should continue to follow the signs and traffic controls currently posted at each intersection unless and until the town adopts and implements new rules.

Point Lookout tow-away proposal

Another hearing concerns a proposed tow-away zone on the east side of Bellmore Avenue in Point Lookout. The proposed location would begin 12 feet north of Lido Boulevard and extend 102 feet north.

The hearing notice identifies the measure as an amendment to the town’s tow-away-zone code. It does not establish that towing is currently authorized at the proposed location.

What residents should watch

Residents and drivers who use the named streets can address the Town Board at Tuesday’s hearing. The measures may be revised after public comment and would require further official action before becoming enforceable local laws.

For now, drivers should rely on posted signs and the final adopted code rather than the hearing proposals when determining where parking, stopping or towing restrictions apply.
