Highway 21 reconstruction continues through Omro, with work expected to finish by late August

Wisconsin Department of Transportation improvement work on State Highway 21 remains active in Omro, with construction expected to continue through the end of August 2026.

The work began in May and includes a planned detour that was shortened from 39 days to 20 days. The shorter schedule reduces the length of time drivers are expected to use the alternate route, although construction-related effects remain in place while the project continues.

Shorter detour, ongoing construction

Residents, school traffic, local businesses and regional commuters may continue to encounter lane, access and detour impacts around the Highway 21 work area until construction is finished.

WHBY reported that an Omro resident viewed the shortened detour as beneficial. The change does not remove the broader construction work, but it cuts the planned detour period by 19 days compared with the original schedule.

The project was still active as of Aug. 8, 2026. It had been expected to wrap up by the end of August, but the current public update does not establish whether that schedule remains unchanged. Highway 21 construction should not be described as complete without a later confirmation from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Separate projects listed in city capital plan

Omro’s 2026 capital plan lists additional infrastructure work separate from the current Highway 21 construction.

The plan includes a $650,000 utility river-crossing reconstruction project for 2026. The project concerns Omro utilities and streets. The plan identifies the work for 2026 but does not establish that the project has been completed.

The same capital plan lists a $1.5 million State Trunk Highway 21 urbanization project for 2028. That is a future city infrastructure project and is not identified as part of the current Wisconsin DOT reconstruction work.

The immediate transportation issue for Omro remains the active Highway 21 project and its related detour and access effects. The city’s capital plan points to additional infrastructure activity beyond the current work, including the planned 2028 STH 21 urbanization project and the 2026 utility river-crossing reconstruction.

For drivers, the key scheduled milestone is the expected end-of-August completion. Until the project is confirmed finished, traffic should continue to account for construction conditions along the Highway 21 corridor through Omro.
