Housing Vote, Warming Trend and Transportation Talks Lead Reno Headlines
Reno, NV – March 11, 2026 – County leaders revive a major housing project, a warming trend raises river concerns, and RTC seeks input on a key corridor plan.
Reno is seeing a mix of growth decisions, shifting weather and long-range transportation planning this week.
County Revives Sierra Reflections Development
Washoe County commissioners voted 3-2 on Tuesday to overturn a previous denial and move the proposed Sierra Reflections subdivision back into play.
The project, planned near Pleasant Valley, could bring hundreds of new homes to the South Valleys area. Commissioners heard hours of public comment raising concerns about traffic, flooding, environmental risks and development within the Carson River mercury superfund site.
Supporters pointed to housing demand and a proposed developer contribution toward a future fire station. The vote does not finalize construction, but it clears a major hurdle and sends the project forward for further review and conditions.
Warming Trend Raises Snowmelt Concerns
After a cool stretch, forecasters say Reno is entering a pronounced warming trend. Highs are climbing into the 70s this week, with even warmer temperatures possible by Friday.
Weather officials warn that above-average temperatures in the Sierra will accelerate snowmelt. Fast, cold flows on the Truckee River could create dangerous conditions, especially for early-season recreation. Gusty winds are also expected at times, adding to choppy lake conditions in the region.
Looking ahead, early projections show next week staying warm and dry, a notable shift as winter transitions toward spring.
RTC Seeks Input on Northeast Connector
The Regional Transportation Commission hosted open houses this week focused on the proposed Northeast Connector. The study explores a potential new route linking Reno-Sparks with the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.
Transportation leaders say the goal is to ease congestion and improve reliability along Interstate 80. Community members reviewed alignment alternatives and offered feedback, which will be incorporated into the ongoing feasibility study.
The project remains in the planning stage, but it signals continued regional efforts to prepare for growth and increased traffic demands.
