Huntington Water Districts Impose Odd-Even Limits During Shortage

Huntington residents served by four local water systems must follow mandatory odd-even irrigation limits during an ongoing water shortage. The Town of Huntington issued its restriction notice on July 16, 2026, after the Suffolk County Water Authority and three town water districts imposed the limits.

What residents must do

The restrictions cover properties served by the Suffolk County Water Authority, Greenlawn Water District, South Huntington Water District and Dix Hills Water District.

Under the schedule, houses with odd-numbered street addresses may irrigate only on odd-numbered calendar days. Houses with even-numbered street addresses may irrigate only on even-numbered days. Homeowners, landlords, landscapers and property managers should adjust automatic irrigation timers and make sure workers or tenants understand the schedule.

The overnight request is separate

The Huntington notice also urges residents to refrain from using irrigation systems between midnight and 8 a.m. That overnight conservation request is presented separately from the mandatory odd-even restriction. Residents should treat it as an important conservation measure, but the notice does not describe it as an additional mandatory ban.

Why officials acted

In a July 14 alert, the Suffolk County Water Authority said Suffolk County remained in a moderate drought, with severe drought conditions affecting portions of Huntington and the East End. The authority also reported record systemwide pumpage in June, when it withdrew 11.15 billion gallons across its system.

The authority said heavy overnight and early-morning irrigation demand can leave storage tanks at low levels at the start of the day. Those tanks help maintain pressure across the distribution system. If tank levels fall too low, officials said, pressure can decline, lowering flow to homes and limiting the amount of water available for fire protection.

The authority also said its production facilities were operating at capacity and that no additional infrastructure was available to meet the demand described in the alert. Officials cited conservation as necessary to help maintain system pressure and preserve water availability for regular use and emergencies.

What Huntington residents should check

Residents should confirm which water provider serves their address. Huntington is a town in Suffolk County with multiple water systems, so the restrictions described here apply to the four systems named in the town notice—not automatically to every water provider in the county.

For permitted irrigation, residents should match watering days to their street number and avoid irrigation between midnight and 8 a.m. They should also monitor the Town of Huntington and their water provider for updates about the shortage, including any changes to the schedule or future guidance on duration, exemptions and enforcement.
