I-80 and I-55 Interchange Ramp Changes Remain in Effect in Joliet

Joliet drivers still cannot use every movement at the I-80/I-55 interchange. As of August 4, 2026, the eastbound I-80 ramp to northbound I-55 is open, while the northbound I-55-to-westbound I-80, westbound I-80-to-southbound I-55 and southbound I-55-to-eastbound I-80 movements remain closed.

The active configuration affects commuters, freight traffic and drivers transferring between the two interstates. Signed detours are in place, and drivers should follow field signs and allow extra time because work-zone patterns can change.

Ramp-by-ramp status

The eastbound I-80 ramp to northbound I-55 reopened by 5 a.m. July 1, according to the City of Joliet and the I-80 Will project traffic alerts. That restored one direct connection for traffic traveling east on I-80 toward northbound I-55.

These movements remain closed:

Northbound I-55 to westbound I-80.
Westbound I-80 to southbound I-55.
Southbound I-55 to eastbound I-80.

For northbound I-55 traffic seeking westbound I-80, the signed detour directs drivers to continue north on I-55, exit at Illinois 59, then reenter southbound I-55 to reach westbound I-80.

For westbound I-80 traffic seeking southbound I-55, the signed detour directs drivers to continue west on I-80, exit at southbound Ridge Road, then reenter eastbound I-80 to access southbound I-55.

Southbound I-55 connection remains closed through fall

The southbound I-55 ramp to eastbound I-80 remains closed. The current I-80 Will alert says that connection is expected to remain closed through fall 2026, while the City of Joliet’s June 30 notice described the reopening timing as later in the fall. The schedule remains subject to change because of weather and other construction conditions.

The ramp changes are part of work to rebuild the I-80 bridges over I-55 and modernize the interchange. The City of Joliet says drivers should continue to expect lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays in the broader work area, and should follow posted signs and allow extra time.

Separate Joliet restrictions listed by IDOT

IDOT’s temporary restriction list dated July 29, 2026, also identifies separate Joliet-area restrictions. It lists the southbound Illinois 7 ramps to westbound I-80 and eastbound I-80, both with expiration dates of August 31, 2026.

Those entries are separate records in IDOT’s statewide restriction list and should not be treated as additional I-80/I-55 interchange closures. The list also includes separate Joliet restrictions on Center Street and ramps connecting Center Street or Meadow Avenue with I-80, with expiration dates extending into 2027 and 2028.

Chicago Street closures are a separate long-term issue

Drivers should distinguish the current I-80/I-55 ramp configuration from the long-term closures at the I-80 and Chicago Street interchange. I-80 Will says multiple Chicago Street ramps will remain closed through 2028 as crews rebuild that interchange and related portions of the corridor.

CBS Chicago reported that westbound I-80 traffic headed for Chicago Street is being routed to the Larkin Avenue, or Illinois 7, interchange. The broader I-80 reconstruction project is expected to be completed in 2028, with some final work extending into 2029.

What Joliet drivers should do

Drivers connecting between I-80 and I-55 should not assume the normal ramp pattern has returned. Check current I-80 Will and IDOT information before traveling, follow field signage and use the signed detour for the specific closed movement.

For commuters and freight operators, the key distinction is that the eastbound I-80-to-northbound I-55 connection is open, but the northbound I-55-to-westbound I-80, westbound I-80-to-southbound I-55 and southbound I-55-to-eastbound I-80 movements remain unavailable under the current configuration.
