Independence Daily Brief: Weather, Revitalization and Local Sports
Good morning, Independence. Here’s a quick roundup of what’s been happening close to home over the last couple of days.
Snowy Friday slows traffic, cold weekend ahead
Friday’s winter weather advisory dropped around one to three inches of snow across Northern Kentucky, including Independence, leading to slick spots and a level 1 snow emergency in Kenton County.
Roads stayed mostly passable but required slower speeds and extra stopping distance, and forecasters expect a bright but very cold weekend before temperatures slowly climb early next week.
Downtown Independence lands $900K for revitalization
A new community redevelopment grant will send $900,000 to the City of Independence to help acquire and improve underused commercial properties in key corridors.
The city is expected to contribute about $100,000 of its own funds and will have roughly three years to put the money to work on targeted sites downtown and near the Cherokee Plaza shopping area.
Local officials have discussed using the funding for façade improvements, streetscape upgrades and other public enhancements aimed at attracting small businesses, neighborhood cafes and gathering spots while supporting jobs.
Simon Kenton girls seize regional bragging rights
On the courts, Simon Kenton High School’s girls basketball team delivered one of the region’s standout performances Thursday night with a 61–50 road win at Cooper.
The Lady Pioneers erased a six-point halftime deficit behind a dominant third quarter, tightening their defense and turning stops into baskets to flip the game in their favor.
Guard Brynli Pernell led the way with 28 points, including 19 in the second half, while teammates Haylie Webb and eighth grader Angela Kabeya added key scoring as the team strengthened its claim as Northern Kentucky’s top contender.
