Jacksonville Daily Brief: Weekend shootings, freeze response, and a property-fraud alert reminder
Jacksonville, FL – February 23, 2026 – Weekend shootings, a hard freeze tonight, and a property-fraud alert push lead today’s local headlines.
Jacksonville is juggling a sudden cold snap and a busy public-safety weekend, with police investigating two separate shootings tied to large gatherings.
Public safety
In Jacksonville Beach, police said an unpermitted ‘takeover’ gathering near Beach Boulevard and Third Street turned violent Saturday evening, Feb. 21. One juvenile and three adults were struck by gunfire, and officials said all are expected to survive. City leaders stressed the incident was separate from the nearby Seawalk Music Festival, and investigators were still working to identify those responsible.
Hours later on Jacksonville’s Eastside, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said four adults were shot during a street party near Jessie Street and A. Philip Randolph Boulevard early Sunday, Feb. 22. Officers responded after a ShotSpotter alert and found one victim at the scene, while three other victims later arrived at a hospital. Police said the injuries were non-life-threatening and asked anyone with information to contact investigators.
Cold snap and fire danger
After record warmth, a strong front brought much colder air to Northeast Florida. With freezing temperatures and wind chills expected overnight, the city said it will open an overnight warming center at the Legends Center (5130 Soutel Drive) from 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, with transportation support for vulnerable residents. Forecasts also flagged very dry, windy conditions that can quickly worsen brush fires.
Consumer protection
Duval County officials are also urging property owners to consider signing up for a free Property Fraud Alert service through the Clerk of Court. The program can notify residents when certain documents are recorded in their name, offering an early warning to review filings and report suspicious activity quickly.
