Kittanning-area drivers face two Route 422 ramp closures
Two ramps serving Kittanning-area traffic are scheduled to close August 3 and 4 for high-friction pavement work, with weather backup dates possible.
Drivers using two ramps serving Kittanning-area traffic should plan for separate one-day closures in early August while PennDOT applies a high-friction surface treatment in the adjacent West Kittanning area.
The first closure is scheduled for Monday, August 3, 2026, when the Route 422 westbound off-ramp to Route 268 will close. The second is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, when the Route 268 on-ramp to eastbound Route 422 will close.
Detour for the August 3 closure
For the Route 422 westbound off-ramp closure, PennDOT says drivers should continue west on Route 422 for approximately one-half mile to the Route 422 West Hills exit. Drivers should take the West Hills exit, merge onto Glade Park East and continue to Nolte Drive before merging onto Route 422 east. From there, motorists should follow Route 422 east and exit onto the Route 268, Route 422 East Business and West Kittanning ramp.
Detour for the August 4 closure
When the Route 268 on-ramp to eastbound Route 422 is closed, PennDOT says motorists should travel west on Route 268 to the Route 422 westbound and Butler on-ramp. Drivers will then continue on Route 422 to the West Hills exit, merge onto Glade Park East and Nolte Drive, and continue onto Route 422 east.
Each ramp is expected to have a one-day detour while the work is performed. PennDOT’s announcement describes separate closures, not a simultaneous closure of both ramps.
Why PennDOT is doing the work
High-friction surface treatment applies aggregate to pavement with a binder to restore or maintain pavement friction. PennDOT says the treatment is intended to support pavement friction in both wet and dry driving conditions. It is a pavement treatment project, not a guarantee that crashes will be eliminated.
Kittanning is a borough in Armstrong County. The affected ramps are in the adjacent West Kittanning area but serve travel into and through the Kittanning area. The closures could require commuters, customers, delivery operators and commercial drivers to allow additional time and follow the posted detours. Drivers handling time-sensitive trips should review the route before leaving, particularly if they use the ramps for work, deliveries or access to local businesses.
Weather could change the schedule. PennDOT said the work may move to August 5, 6 or 7 if inclement weather prevents completion on the planned dates. The closures therefore remain scheduled work, and motorists should check PennDOT traffic information for day-of updates before traveling through the interchange.
