Lafayette Gas Hits $3.77 as Diesel Reaches $5.46
Regular gasoline and diesel both moved higher in the Lafayette metro on July 31, but diesel remained the more expensive fuel by a wide margin, according to AAA’s latest Indiana fuel-price check.
AAA listed Lafayette’s regular-gas metro average at $3.768 per gallon. That was 13.6 cents higher than the previous day’s average, 20.3 cents higher than a week earlier, 69.2 cents higher than a month earlier and 55.9 cents higher than a year earlier.
Diesel climbed to $5.46
Lafayette-area diesel averaged $5.455 per gallon on July 31. Diesel rose 3.7 cents from the previous day and was up 31.7 cents from a week earlier. It was also 28.2 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.676 higher than a year earlier.
The separate fuel trends matter to people whose costs depend on gasoline or diesel. Commuters and households are watching regular gas, while delivery operators, contractors, farmers and some service businesses can face greater exposure to diesel prices. Restaurants and other businesses that rely on regular deliveries may also feel higher transportation costs, although the available data does not document specific local reactions.
Indiana gasoline-tax suspensions have an August 6 deadline
Indiana’s Department of Revenue says the current suspensions of the gasoline-use tax and gasoline excise tax run through August 6, 2026. The agency says both taxes are collected at the distributor level rather than charged as separate retail-line items at the pump.
The suspensions apply to gasoline, not diesel. Drivers should not assume that prices will change by the full amount of the suspended taxes immediately after August 6. How and when any change reaches local pumps can vary.
Indiana Public Radio, citing state policy details, reported that the latest extension was described as the final extension available without further legislative action. The deadline gives Lafayette drivers and fuel-dependent businesses another date to watch as prices continue to move.
AAA’s figures are Lafayette metro averages, not a guarantee that every station in Lafayette or West Lafayette is charging the same amount. Individual pump prices can differ by location, brand, timing and fuel grade.
