Lincoln Local Headlines: Child safety case, arson update, and girls state hoops
Lincoln, NE – March 4, 2026 – Arson ruling at Al Nor Market, child-abuse charges, co-responder milestone, and girls state hoops tip off downtown.
Lincoln woke up to a mix of tough public-safety news and big community events as March gets underway.
Public safety: Children found in unsafe conditions after alleged drug deal
Police say an officer spotted a suspected drug transaction near 13th and E, then stopped the vehicle a few blocks away near 11th and O. Court documents allege three young children were in the back seat, and the car was in extremely unsanitary condition.
Two adults were arrested and booked on intentional child abuse charges (no injury alleged). One of them also faces a drug possession count, according to court records. A hearing is scheduled later this month.
Fire update: Central Lincoln market fire ruled arson
Lincoln Fire and Rescue has determined that the Feb. 18 fire at Al Nor Market, near 27th and Vine, was intentionally set. Investigators say the case is now being worked jointly with police.
No injuries were reported, but fire officials said the business is expected to be closed for some time due to damage.
City services: Co-responder program marks its first year
City leaders highlighted the first year of Lincoln’s co-responder program, which pairs mental-health clinicians with police officers on crisis calls. The city reports the team responded to 366 calls in its inaugural year, and that many situations were resolved without further emergency intervention.
Officials emphasized de-escalation and faster connections to care as the main goal, with officers able to clear scenes sooner when clinicians can take the lead on support and referrals.
Worth planning for: Girls state basketball and Broadway news
High school basketball takes over downtown this week as the NSAA girls state tournament runs March 4–7, with championship games at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Lincoln North Star and Lincoln Southwest are among the local teams slated for early-round action.
Looking ahead to next season, the Lied Center announced a new Broadway lineup that includes the return of Hamilton, plus titles like Shucked, Water for Elephants, and Clue. Season packages are set to go on sale March 9.
