Lubbock Local Headlines: Measles Case, LISD Vote, Roadwork, Utility Help
Lubbock, TX – February 27, 2026 – Measles case confirmed, LISD votes on prayer policy and book challenges, plus a 3rd Street closure and bill help.
Public health
Lubbock Public Health confirmed a new measles case in a local resident who was not vaccinated. Officials said they are coordinating with the healthcare facility involved and working to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed.
Health officials reminded residents that measles can spread through the air and symptoms may take days to appear. Anyone who believes they were exposed is being directed to follow instructions provided by public health staff and healthcare providers.
Schools
The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously against adopting a school-day prayer period or a set time for reading religious texts. Trustees cited First Amendment concerns and noted students already have ways to observe their faith as long as it does not disrupt instruction.
In the same meeting, the board approved an updated process for challenging library books. The process starts with a district advisory review before moving to the school board.
Roads and travel
Drivers should plan for a temporary closure on 3rd Street between Santa Fe Drive and Boston Avenue starting Monday, March 2. The work is scheduled to wrap up by March 10, weather permitting, and the city is urging motorists to use alternate routes and allow extra time.
Help with utility bills
Residents with past-due natural gas bills may be able to get assistance during an in-person event Friday, February 27. Organizers said help is first-come, first-served and participants should bring ID and billing information.
Weekend notes
A few community events around town are also on the calendar through Sunday:
- Concert and cultural performances at Buddy Holly Hall
- Local music tribute events scheduled for Sunday
- Theater productions running Friday and Saturday
