Lubbock, TX – February 22, 2026 – Here is a quick look at the most important local stories and happenings around the Hub City today.
Lubbock High bomb threat ends with campus cleared
Lubbock High School spent much of Friday under lockdown after a caller claimed ‘multiple bombs’ were on campus and warned of additional danger outside the building. District police, Lubbock police and state troopers swept the school and surrounding area while nearly 2,000 students were evacuated by bus to the Lubbock ISD Central Office for reunification with families.
Authorities later cleared the building and confirmed that no explosives were found, but classes were canceled for the rest of the day. District officials say the investigation into who made the threat is continuing, and they are reviewing safety procedures after the large scale evacuation.
Dust storm creates dangerous driving and fire conditions
A powerful dust storm earlier in the week turned skies over Lubbock an eerie brown and sharply reduced visibility on roads, especially on the south side of the city. Video shared from the storm showed drivers struggling to see more than a short distance ahead as winds whipped dust across the highway.
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning and a blowing dust advisory, citing southwest winds that at times gusted near 60 miles per hour. Those conditions also pushed fire danger higher on the South Plains, prompting reminders to avoid outdoor burning and to secure loose debris that could become airborne.
Busy weekend: theater, pop culture and live music
Despite the midweek weather and school scare, Lubbock is closing out the weekend with a full slate of events. The musical comedy ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ continues its run at The Buddy Holly Hall, giving theatergoers several chances to catch the stage version of the classic film.
At the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, Lubbock Con is marking its 10th anniversary with vendors, artist booths, gaming areas and costume contests. Music fans are gathering for the Buffalo Grass Fest, which mixes educational workshops with evening performances at the Cactus Theater.
Ag community prepares for Salute to Ag Luncheon
Looking ahead, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce is promoting its upcoming Salute to Ag Luncheon, planned for March 17 at the FiberMax Center for Discovery. The event is timed to the National Day of Ag and will feature a keynote address focused on the importance of agriculture to the region’s economy.
Tickets and table sponsorships are now available through the chamber as local producers, agribusiness leaders and educators get ready for the annual gathering.
