Lynchburg voters face dual primary Tuesday, with polls open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Lynchburg voters head to the polls Tuesday, August 4, for a dual primary requiring each voter to choose either a Democratic or Republican ballot.

Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. The City of Lynchburg Office of the General Registrar says any voter who is in line by 7:00 p.m. will be permitted to vote.

Voters must choose one primary ballot

When checking in, voters will be asked whether they want a Democratic or Republican primary ballot. Virginia law permits voters to participate in only one party’s primary election.

Once a ballot has been issued, a voter may not vote in the other party’s primary. Voters should decide which ballot they want before completing the voting process.

What appears on each ballot

The Democratic primary ballot includes the U.S. House of Representatives contest for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.

The Republican primary ballot includes two contests: the U.S. Senate primary and the U.S. House of Representatives primary for the 5th Congressional District.

Choosing a ballot does not change party registration

Virginia does not register voters by political party affiliation. Selecting a Democratic or Republican primary ballot does not enroll a voter in that party and does not change the voter’s registration in any way.

The ballot choice applies to this primary election only. It does not prevent a voter from choosing a different party’s ballot in a future primary.

Early voting has ended

Early, in-person voting for the August 4 primary ran from June 19 through 5:00 p.m. Saturday, August 1. Lynchburg’s registrar identified the Office of the General Registrar at 825 Kemper Street as the early-voting location. That early-voting option is no longer available on Monday, August 3, or Election Day.

Voters who have not already voted must use their assigned Election Day polling place. Before leaving, voters should confirm that location through Virginia’s official polling-place and ballot information services or by contacting the Lynchburg Office of the General Registrar.

The key deadline is 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Voters do not have to finish voting by that time if they are already in line; anyone in line by 7:00 p.m. will be permitted to vote.
