M-53 Closure Near Cass City Runs Through Mid-October

Travelers using M-53 near Cass City should expect a months-long closure that remains active as of July 31, 2026, while the Michigan Department of Transportation replaces the Greenman Creek bridge. MDOT estimates that the restriction will remain in place through mid-October 2026.

The closed section runs from Argyle Road to M-81, also known as Cass City Road, in Sanilac County. Traffic is being detoured through Argyle Road, Germania Road and Cass City Road.

The work is a state project near Cass City, not a Village of Cass City project. MDOT identifies Cass City as the closest community, so the changed route may affect some residents, commuters, farm traffic, commercial vehicles and other travelers who regularly use the corridor. The effect will vary depending on each traveler’s starting point and destination.

What MDOT is building

The project replaces the 1939 bridge over Greenman Creek with a new culvert. The work also includes asphalt reconstruction and guardrail improvements in the project area.

MDOT estimates the project cost at approximately $2.5 million. The department also projects an economic impact of 21 jobs through its modeling. That figure represents a modeled project impact, not a confirmation of 21 new local hires.

What travelers should expect

Because the closure is expected to continue into the fall, drivers who use M-53 near Cass City should plan for the documented detour through Argyle, Germania and Cass City roads. The route change may add time for some trips, particularly for work, school, deliveries, agricultural activity or regional services.

The expected reopening window is mid-October, but MDOT describes that timing as an estimate tied to construction progress. Travelers should continue to use the posted detour until the restriction is lifted.

The Michigan’s Thumb independently reported the closure, bridge replacement and expected mid-October duration. MDOT’s active restriction bulletin confirms the restricted M-53 segment in Sanilac County.

The project is intended to address an aging bridge while rebuilding the roadway and improving roadside safety features. For Cass City-area travelers, the practical issue remains the same through the construction period: M-53 traffic must follow the detour until the project is complete and the highway reopens.
