Cleveland closed out a busy weekend in downtown sports while keeping an eye on a powerful storm system moving across parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes.
Akron Wins MAC Men’s Title at Rocket Arena
The Mid-American Conference men’s basketball tournament wrapped up Saturday, March 14 at Rocket Arena. Akron captured the 2026 MAC championship, earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The event brought thousands of fans downtown over three days, giving restaurants and hotels a late-season boost. Tournament play ran March 12 through March 14 and once again highlighted Cleveland’s role as a regular host for major college basketball events.
Miami Claims Women’s MAC Championship
Just days earlier, the MAC women’s basketball tournament also took center stage at Rocket Arena. Miami secured the 2026 women’s title, punching its ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
The women’s championship games were held March 11 and March 13–14, adding to a packed week of collegiate competition in the city. With both tournaments drawing regional fan bases, downtown Cleveland saw steady foot traffic and national exposure.
Major Storm System Impacts Travel Across Region
Meanwhile, a large storm system that developed March 13 continued moving across parts of the country into March 16, prompting widespread winter weather alerts in several states and causing significant travel disruptions.
While the heaviest impacts were reported farther west and north, the system contributed to flight cancellations and broader travel concerns across the Midwest. Travelers in and out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport were encouraged to check flight statuses as conditions evolved.
With tournament crowds departing and spring break travel picking up, the timing added another layer of caution for local transportation officials and travelers alike.
