Madison Daily Brief: Crime Trends, Regent Street Update, and the World Cheese Contest
Madison, WI – March 4, 2026 – Police report shows 2025 crime down, Regent Street redesign advances, and global cheesemakers judge at Monona Terrace.
1) 2025 crime report: declines, plus a few new concerns
Madison police released their 2025 crime report on Monday, March 2, highlighting drops in both violent and property crime. The report notes fewer shots-fired incidents in 2025 than in 2024, along with fewer burglaries and fewer stolen vehicles year over year.
Officials also pointed to areas they are watching closely in 2026, including a recent uptick in stolen vehicles that police say is showing up most on the east and north sides. The report also touched on overdose deaths and efforts to connect people to services rather than cycling them through the criminal justice system.
2) Regent Street reconstruction plan heads to a key vote
An updated design for rebuilding Regent Street is headed to the Transportation Commission on Wednesday. The project area runs from Randall Avenue to South Park Street, and the city has said the work is intended to replace aging utilities, adjust traffic operations, and improve pedestrian safety.
After earlier feedback raised alarms about losing parking, the revised plan aims to keep more existing parking while still widening sidewalks and updating the street design. Business owners and community representatives said the updated concept better balances access for customers with safety for people walking through one of the citys busiest corridors.
3) A global cheese spotlight at Monona Terrace
The World Championship Cheese Contest is in Madison this week, bringing dairy producers from around the world to Monona Terrace. Public viewing is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, with winners set to be announced Thursday, March 5.
For locals, its a rare chance to see how international judging works up close and to sample a wide range of styles and milks. For the city, its another reminder that major food and agriculture events still have real pull in downtown Madison during the shoulder season.
