Madison, WI — February 17, 2026 — A campus arrest, a dog park shutdown and Election Day itself top today’s local stories in Madison.
UW–Madison student arrested in dorm restroom recording case
UW–Madison police have arrested a 19-year-old student who is accused of secretly recording people in a residence hall restroom. According to police summaries, residents reported seeing a phone slid under stall dividers, apparently with the camera pointed upward. A student who said this happened to him multiple times grabbed the device, and officers later booked the suspect into the Dane County Jail on counts that include disorderly conduct and capturing an image of nudity without consent.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone who noticed suspicious behavior in campus bathrooms to contact UW–Madison Police. The residence hall involved has not been publicly named, but added monitoring and outreach to students are underway.
Warner Park dog area closed after dog’s sudden death
Madison’s Warner Park off-leash dog area remains closed after a dog reportedly became ill and died shortly after visiting the park late last week. City parks officials say rangers shut the gates as a precaution while they consult with veterinary experts and public health staff about possible environmental or toxic hazards.
Multiple dog owners have since contacted the city, and online posts describe other animals getting sick after recent visits. For now, dog owners are being directed to other off-leash areas in the city while officials review reports and consider next steps. The dog park will stay closed until further notice, with updates promised on the city’s parks website.
Spring primary election on today’s ballot
Madison voters head to the polls today for the statewide spring primary. City and county clerks note that polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with local races helping shape the April spring election ballot. All Dane County voters will help narrow a field of candidates for a circuit court judgeship, while some Madison districts also have municipal and school contests on the line.
Residents can find their polling place, review sample ballots and check registration status through state and city election resources. Same-day registration is available at polling sites for eligible voters who bring the required identification and proof of address.
Looking ahead
City officials are expected to provide further updates this week on both the Warner dog park closure and campus safety efforts following the UW restroom case. Election results from today’s primary will also set the stage for a busier local ballot in April.
