Hospital job cuts hit local workers

Dozens of health care jobs in Mason City are on the line as MercyOne moves forward with a new round of staff cuts across its Iowa network. The system has announced plans to eliminate positions at its North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, as well as larger facilities in Des Moines and Ottumwa.

Local employees are still learning how individual roles will be affected, but hospital officials say patient services will remain in place. Community leaders are watching closely, since MercyOne is one of the region’s major employers and a key part of Mason City’s medical hub.

Downtown packed with Saturday events

Downtown Mason City is especially busy today, with a string of small-business and arts events on the calendar. Shoppers can browse the Shop Highlights Exhibition on Second Street Southeast, while collectors and sports fans drift through a sports card show on South Federal Avenue.

Ice, music, and more at the arena

At the Mason City Arena, the Skate River City 2026 Compete USA figure skating event is drawing skaters and families for a full day of competition. The arena follows a busy Friday night that featured junior hockey action as the North Iowa Bulls continued their season schedule.

Later tonight, local venues are leaning into music and midwinter fun. A metal showcase, live blues set, and a Valentine themed cookie decorating workshop are all on tap, along with a tongue in cheek celebration of National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day at a Federal Avenue shop.

County posts February schedule

Cerro Gordo County has also posted its February calendar, outlining board of supervisors meetings, sheriff’s sales, and nature programs at Lime Creek. The next supervisors meeting is set for Monday morning in the courthouse boardroom, giving residents a chance to follow budget and policy discussions.

The county schedule also highlights late month events, including youth nature programs and a sheriff’s sale that was postponed from earlier in the year. Officials continue to encourage residents to use the county site to track meeting times and agenda updates.
