Ashland, Mississippi — The Mississippi Department of Transportation lists an active resurfacing project on approximately 10.1 miles of Mississippi 178 in Benton County, a route connected to the Ashland-area road network.

MDOT’s schedule, current as of August 4, 2026, identifies project MP-2178-05(002) / 309966301 as maintenance mill-and-overlay work extending from the Marshall County line to the Union County line. The records identify the countywide route segment, but they do not establish that the work is inside Ashland city limits.

Project covers 10.1 miles of MS 178

The Benton County project covers approximately 10.1 miles of MS 178 between the two county lines. That makes it relevant to Ashland residents and others who use the highway for commuting, school transportation, deliveries, shopping and other trips through the county.

Ashland is the Benton County seat, and the Benton County School District lists its administrative address at 231 Court Street in Ashland. That county connection helps explain why the project matters locally, although the reviewed records do not confirm that school routes or other city services will be disrupted.

MDOT’s June 9 bid-award record shows that the agency awarded the contract to WG Construction Company Inc. of Ripley. The awarded amount is $6,061,169.12.

MDOT’s contract-time notice lists July 9, 2026, as the anticipated notice-to-proceed date and May 29, 2027, as the completion date. The July date is an anticipated contractual milestone, not independent proof that field work began that day. The May 29 date is a contract target and may change if the schedule is revised or extended.

Traffic effects are not confirmed for Benton County

The MDOT traffic-alert page reviewed for this article showed separate MS 178 work in Union County, including a slide-repair closure, and other work in Marshall County. It did not show a Benton County alert confirming a closure or detour for the resurfacing segment.

Those Union and Marshall county notices should not be confused with the Benton County project. Drivers, school transportation operators, workers and businesses should check current MDOT traffic notices before assuming that a particular lane restriction, delay or detour is active.

What Ashland-area readers should watch

MDOT states that its project schedule is continuously subject to revision. Future updates may clarify work sequencing, traffic-control measures, lane restrictions and progress toward the May 29, 2027, completion target.

For now, the confirmed development is an active resurfacing project on a 10.1-mile Benton County section of MS 178. Its limits run between the Marshall County and Union County lines, rather than being confirmed as work within Ashland city limits.
