MDOT lists planned $900,000 ultra-thin overlay on MS 550 in Jefferson County
The Mississippi Department of Transportation lists a proposed $900,000 pavement-preservation project on MS 550 in Jefferson County, a route that may be used by Fayette-area residents, workers and businesses.
The project is not identified as work inside Fayette city limits. MDOT describes the limits as MS 550 from MS 28 to the Lincoln County line.
What MDOT lists now
MDOT’s 2026-2028 Maintenance and Pavement Rehabilitation Program identifies Project 310032 on MS 550. The plan assigns the project to Federal Fiscal Year 2026, gives it a $900,000 cost estimate and describes the scope as an ultra-thin overlay.
MDOT’s Schedule of Proposed Projects lists the work under federal project number MP-3550-32(001) for August 2026. The page says the proposed-letting list was last updated August 1, 2026, and warns that it is subject to continuous revision, including moving projects to earlier or later months.
Why Fayette readers may care
Fayette, Mississippi, is the seat of Jefferson County. That makes a planned project on a Jefferson County state route relevant to residents, commuters, workers and businesses that use MS 550 for county or regional travel, even though the published termini do not establish that the project enters Fayette.
An ultra-thin overlay is a pavement-preservation treatment in MDOT’s listing. The record does not describe a full reconstruction, widening project or major route expansion. It also does not establish how the pavement will perform beyond the agency’s stated scope.
The listing changed from the prior plan
MDOT’s 2025-2027 plan listed the same general MS 550 limits as Project 109039. That earlier entry showed a $1.4 million estimate and described the work as an ordinary overlay.
The current plan uses Project 310032, a lower estimate and an ultra-thin-overlay description. The records support describing the current entry as a changed or reprogrammed listing, but they do not explain whether the change reflects a cancellation, award, engineering decision or another specific action.
What remains unknown
The proposed-letting record does not confirm a construction start date, contractor, final bid amount, completion date, work phases, lane closures, detours or traffic impacts. Those details would require later MDOT letting, award or construction notices.
This listing concerns a state route. Jefferson County’s Road Department separately identifies county roads and bridges as its responsibility, so county-road maintenance questions should not automatically be treated as questions about the MS 550 project.
For now, Fayette-area drivers can treat Project 310032 as planned work that may eventually affect travel on the Jefferson County section of MS 550—not as an active construction project with a confirmed schedule.
