Mechanicville water-system problems continue after pipe break and 30% rate increase

Mechanicville lifted a three-day boil-water advisory Tuesday morning after a six-inch water pipe burst at Park and Central avenues, but the disruption has renewed concerns about recurring breaks in the city’s water system and the effect of a 30% rate increase enacted the previous summer.

The break occurred early Saturday, according to a Times Union report published June 17. The advisory remained in place for three days before the city issued an all-clear. Public Works Commissioner Sal Costanzo said residents could resume drinking and bathing after the advisory was lifted.

A second pipe fracture this year

The incident was reported as Mechanicville’s second water-pipe fracture of 2026. It was also the city’s first boil-water advisory of the year.

A broken water main can disrupt more than normal household service. During the advisory, residents were temporarily unable to rely on tap water for drinking and bathing until the city determined that those uses could resume. The all-clear ended that immediate restriction, but the episode added another interruption for people who depend on the municipal system for daily needs.

The location at Park and Central avenues also placed the latest failure in a defined part of the city’s water network. The incident brought renewed attention to the condition and reliability of infrastructure that residents continue to fund through their water bills.
