Melrose resident arrested after MBTA assault investigation

On Friday morning, Malden police officers arrested a 34-year-old Melrose man at a home on Ferdinand Street in connection with a series of assaults near the Malden Center MBTA station. Investigators say several incidents in mid-January appeared to be random, with at least two described as sexually motivated.

Detectives report that video evidence helped identify two women who were assaulted, and they believe there may be at least two additional victims who have not yet come forward. The suspect was taken into custody on the strength of arrest and search warrants. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Earlier this week: twin water main breaks repaired

City officials say two water main breaks that hit Melrose on Monday evening have been fully repaired. The breaks occurred around the same time on West Wyoming Avenue and Swains Pond Avenue near the Malden line, briefly disrupting water service and local traffic while crews worked.

The Department of Public Works restored service by Monday night, though some households saw discolored water when taps first came back on. Residents in the affected neighborhoods were advised to run cold water from the lowest level in their homes until it cleared. The city noted that recent freezing temperatures are a likely factor in this week’s pipe problems, a reminder that winter remains hard on aging underground infrastructure.
