Minneapolis Daily Local Headlines: Eviction timing, Metro Surge policing questions, Prince Celebration dates
Minneapolis, MN – March 5, 2026 – Council backs a 60-day eviction notice rule, presses police on Metro Surge response, and Prince Celebration dates drop.
Here’s a quick look at the biggest local developments shaping Minneapolis heading into the weekend, from housing protections to ongoing fallout from federal immigration enforcement, plus a major summer date for music fans.
City Council votes to extend the eviction notice timeline
The City Council approved a temporary change that would require landlords to wait 60 days, instead of 30, before filing an eviction case. The vote was 7-5, and the change would run through Aug. 31 if it is signed by Mayor Jacob Frey.
Supporters framed the measure as a short-term backstop for renters facing sudden income loss and disruptions tied to Operation Metro Surge. City estimates shared alongside the vote put the additional monthly need for rental support at about $15.7 million, and the council recently approved $1 million in rental assistance routed through Hennepin County.
Police chief pressed over response to federal agents during Metro Surge
At a full-council committee meeting, several council members pushed Police Chief Brian O’Hara on why local officers did not do more to stop what they described as excessive force, chemical munitions use, and other conduct by federal immigration agents during the 12-week surge.
O’Hara told council members that city policy bars police from assisting with immigration enforcement, and that officers generally cannot prevent federal agents from enforcing federal law unless they witness egregious, unlawful behavior and are able to intervene. He said the department is investigating two misdemeanor assaults allegedly involving federal agents, and he emphasized the legal and practical complexity of proving crimes when different agencies operate under different rules.
O’Hara also described a strained department: more than 1,000 days off canceled, 500 shifts extended, and $6.4 million in overtime costs as of Feb. 8, alongside staffing gaps from retirements and leave.
Prince Celebration sets downtown Minneapolis plans for June
Organizers announced Prince Celebration 2026 will run June 3–7, with events planned in downtown Minneapolis as well as at Paisley Park. The outline includes concerts, panels, a new-artist showcase, and a block party near the downtown Prince mural, plus a screening of ‘Under the Cherry Moon’.
More programming details are expected before the end of March, and early ticket pricing was listed at $700 for general admission, with later pricing higher.
