Safety Planning Opens for Public Input

The City of Mission Viejo has released a draft update of its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan and is inviting residents to review and comment. The plan focuses on preparing for risks such as wildfires, earthquakes, flooding, and severe weather, with the goal of reducing damage and improving emergency response.

Community feedback will be accepted through March 6. City staff say public input helps shape priorities and also keeps the city eligible for state and federal safety grants.

Free Smoke Alarm Support for Homes

Mission Viejo continues its partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority to promote home fire safety. Through the OCFA Smoke Alarm Program, qualifying households can receive free smoke alarms and installation assistance.

The program is especially geared toward seniors, disabled residents, and others who may need extra help, but it is open citywide as resources allow. Fire officials stress that working smoke alarms remain one of the simplest ways to prevent serious injuries.

Library Programs and Local History on Display

The Mission Viejo Library released its February newsletter highlighting free classes and exhibits. This month includes hands-on help with setting up and using Gmail accounts, along with a genealogy workshop later in the month.

Visitors can also view a local history display celebrating Mission Viejo’s role in the nation’s 1976 Bicentennial, part of early events leading up to America’s 250th anniversary.

Meetings and Community Service Ahead

Looking ahead, the Planning and Transportation Commission meets Monday evening, February 9, followed by a City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 10, both at City Hall.

Residents can also sign up for a mid-February neighborhood service project organized by Love Mission Viejo, offering hands-on volunteer opportunities to help local seniors, veterans, and neighbors in need.
