Montgomery Posts Downtown Reimagined Concepts for McCown Street
Montgomery has posted new visual concepts for possible improvements around McCown Street, giving residents and downtown businesses a clearer look at how the corridor and nearby blocks could change.
The City of Montgomery published the Downtown Reimagined update on July 23, 2026. The update links to a 14-page presentation prepared by Ward Getz + Associates and Buckson Landscape Architecture.
Where the concepts apply
The primary project area is centered on McCown Street between College Street and Caroline Street. The broader concept extends south toward Liberty Street and east toward State Highway 105.
The presentation includes an overall project map, enlarged views of the north and south ends, and separate pages showing possible construction limits and detour patterns. Those maps reference College Street, McCown Street, Caroline Street and John A. Butler Street.
What the planning presentation shows
The illustrated streetscape includes proposed enhanced pedestrian crossings, colored pavers, benches, pedestrian pathways, landscape islands, trees, lighting and intersection pavers. The north-end concepts also show parking arrangements, an existing kiosk and tree grates.
The south-end concepts include a proposed monument sign, additional pedestrian connections and landscaping near Liberty Street and State Highway 105. The presentation also identifies a possible Liberty Tree and a historical house that could be relocated.
These elements are shown as concepts rather than confirmed construction features. The document uses planning language such as “proposed,” and the visuals do not establish that every element will be built in its illustrated form.
Construction phasing is also preliminary
Several slides illustrate possible work limits and detour patterns. They show how construction could be divided around downtown streets, but they are not presented as final traffic-control plans.
That distinction matters for downtown merchants, property owners, commuters and visitors. The available materials do not confirm which streets would close, how access would be maintained, how many parking spaces could be affected or when any work would occur.
What remains unconfirmed
The July 23 update and presentation do not establish a final construction start date, total project cost, funding source, final property impacts or a public-input schedule. They also do not confirm that the illustrated parking, monument sign, historical-house relocation or Liberty Tree will be part of a final project.
A May 12, 2026 City Council agenda provides earlier context. It listed consideration and possible action on a resolution approving a Montgomery Economic Development Corporation project and expenditure for the design and construction of downtown improvements. The agenda also listed consideration and possible action on a professional engineering services agreement.
An agenda item or consideration of a resolution is not, by itself, proof of a final construction authorization, completed funding action or scheduled work. Those details would need to be confirmed in later city records.

Residents and downtown businesses should look for official notices covering funding, design or construction authorization, a project schedule, final traffic-control plans, parking and access arrangements, property impacts and opportunities for public input.
For now, the presentation provides a more detailed picture of what Montgomery is studying for McCown Street and nearby downtown blocks. It does not yet confirm when, or whether, construction will begin.
