Murder Arrest, DOJ Oversight Extension and Youth Service Highlight Bakersfield Headlines
Bakersfield, CA – March 12, 2026 – A murder suspect is in custody, state oversight of the sheriff is extended, and youth volunteers rally across the city.
Bakersfield is waking up to a mix of serious public safety developments and hopeful community efforts.
Oildale Shooting Suspect Arrested
A 27-year-old man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting outside the Long Branch Saloon in Oildale is now in custody. Kern County Sheriff’s officials say the arrest follows a March 7 incident in which a man was shot and killed after an argument that began inside the bar and continued into the parking lot.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. A vigil was held Wednesday evening outside the saloon as friends and family gathered to remember him. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
State Extends Oversight of Sheriff’s Office
In a separate but significant development, the California Department of Justice has extended its stipulated judgment agreement with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office for another two years.
The agreement stems from a long-running state investigation into use-of-force practices and civil rights concerns. Officials say the extension is designed to ensure continued reforms, policy updates and improved accountability measures within local law enforcement agencies.
The sheriff’s office has previously reported progress on training, data tracking and community engagement requirements tied to the settlement.
Youth Volunteers Step Up at Service Corps Event
On a more uplifting note, more than 100 young volunteers gathered at Cal State Bakersfield for the county’s first California Service Corps Connections event.
Participants from several programs, including AmeriCorps and local youth initiatives, assembled hygiene kits for vulnerable teens and worked on improvements to CSUB’s edible garden. City leaders praised the event as a strong example of youth leadership and regional collaboration.
Job Seekers Turn Out for Bakersfield Job Fest
Meanwhile, job seekers filled the Dignity Health Arena and Convention Center on Wednesday for the March Bakersfield Job Fest. The event connected residents with employers across multiple industries, offering networking opportunities and on-the-spot applications.
Organizers say workforce events like this remain critical as Kern County continues efforts to strengthen its local economy.
