New London Gold Star Bridge work brings August night closures
New London drivers face scheduled Aug. 11–15 night closures at Exit 83 and South Frontage Road as northbound bridge traffic shifts into Stage 1.
New London drivers should expect another scheduled change around the Gold Star Bridge in August. The city says the I-95 northbound Exit 83 ramp and South Frontage Road are scheduled to close nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Tuesday, August 11, through Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The closures are tied to girder installation for the ongoing bridge project. The city says marked detours and signs will guide motorists around the work zone, while weather or other unforeseen conditions could modify the schedule. Drivers using the affected locations should check the city’s Gold Star Bridge updates and CTDOT’s current road advisories before traveling during the closure window.
Northbound traffic is entering another project phase
The August work follows the I-95 northbound crossover that was implemented in late May. The city’s June 26 update said the project would move northbound local traffic into its permanent Stage 1 alignment during August.
In that planned configuration, the two local-traffic lanes will be repositioned toward the center of the Gold Star Bridge rather than remaining toward the right side of the bridge. Barriers will be installed along the northbound local lanes, creating a more confined travel corridor with limited shoulders. The city said that condition was expected to be fully in place by the end of August.
The Stage 1 alignment is a scheduled project milestone, not a claim that every construction step has been completed. The Gold Star Bridge work is part of CTDOT’s projects affecting the I-95 connection between New London and Groton. Drivers should follow the lane markings and signs in place when they travel, particularly if their usual route depends on the Exit 83 area or local access near the bridge.
Route 1 work was a separate project
CTDOT also issued a separate notice for milling and resurfacing on Route 1. The project covered 1.55 miles from Route 156, or Rope Ferry Road, in Waterford to Service Route 641, or Jefferson Avenue, in New London.
CTDOT’s weather-adjusted notice scheduled the resurfacing portion from the evening of July 12 through Friday morning, July 24, with nighttime lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. As of August 1, that published work window had passed; readers should use current CTDOT information to confirm whether any extension or follow-up work was announced.
The Route 1 project should not be treated as part of the Gold Star Bridge work. It is relevant to trips approaching New London from Waterford, especially near the Jefferson Avenue endpoint. The practical effects of the two projects may include changing lane positions, nighttime ramp closures, detours or extra travel time, but the available notices do not document specific delay amounts.
What commuters should watch
During the scheduled August 11–15 closure window, drivers using the northbound Exit 83 ramp or South Frontage Road should allow flexibility and follow posted detour signs. Emergency-service agencies have also been preparing backup routing options as bridge construction continues, but that planning does not establish that service disruptions have occurred.
