Norton Shores Daily Brief: Sewer Work, Winter Weather and Futsal Ahead
Norton Shores, MI — February 7, 2026 — Lane closures on Grand Haven Road, snow-cooled roads, and a big futsal weekend ahead shape today’s local outlook.
Grand Haven Road sewer work to bring lane closures
A fresh city update on Friday outlines the next phase of sewer lining along Grand Haven Road between Mount Garfield Road and Ellis Road. Crews are scheduled to begin Phase 2 work on Monday, February 16, with lane closures, flaggers, and shifting traffic patterns in the work zone.
The bulk of the project runs through the winter and early spring, with completion targeted by June. Drivers who use this stretch of Grand Haven Road should plan for delays, build in extra travel time, and watch for workers and construction vehicles in and out of the corridor.
Winter system leaves slick roads around the lakeshore
A winter weather advisory that stretched into Friday brought a mix of snow and light ice to parts of west and central Michigan. Forecasters called for roughly two to four inches of accumulation in spots, along with a thin glaze of ice that can make untreated surfaces deceptively slick.
Road crews have been working main routes, but some neighborhood streets, parking lots, and sidewalks in and around Norton Shores may still be packed with snow or ice, especially overnight and early in the morning. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, leave extra room to stop, and clear snow from vehicles before heading out.
Futsal tournament headed to Norton Shores later this month
Registration closed on Friday for the West Michigan Futsal Cup, returning to the lakeshore February 20–22. Now in its tenth year, the indoor soccer event is expected to bring youth teams from across the region back into local gyms.
Matches will be played at venues including a sports complex on Judson Road in Norton Shores and partner facilities in nearby communities. The tournament historically draws large crowds of families and spectators, which can mean busier traffic near the sports complex and added business for hotels, restaurants, and shops across the area.
Hunter safety field days on the horizon
The city’s police-led hunter safety program is also looking ahead to its spring and late-summer field days. Participants complete an approved online course first, then spend a day with instructors working through safe handling, simulated hunting scenarios, and basic conservation topics.
Class sizes are capped, and registration closes several weeks before each scheduled field day, so residents interested in participating are encouraged to sign up early.
