Oak Harbor Daily: Weather Updates, Training, and Weekend Events
Oak Harbor, WA — February 7, 2026 — City updates winter weather guidance, highlights next week’s emergency training and a few community events around town.
Weather & roads: City issues fresh winter update
Oak Harbor’s emergency team refreshed its winter weather page this morning, noting that snow and ice are possible and that updates will post there as conditions change. The latest note lists no city office closures, but it does flag that solid waste crews may run a little behind schedule if roads stay slick.
The city is asking drivers to give plows and sanders plenty of room, check conditions before heading out, and watch for black ice when temperatures hover near freezing. Residents are also urged to winterize pipes and outdoor faucets, salt walkways, and move carefully on sidewalks and parking lots.
Emergency training at Oak Harbor Fire Department
Island County’s Department of Emergency Management is bringing a Community Emergency Response Team basic course to Oak Harbor from February 13 to 15 at the Oak Harbor Fire Department on East Whidbey Avenue. The three‑day class covers skills like basic disaster first aid, light search and rescue, and how to organize neighbors after a major storm or earthquake.
Spots are limited, so residents who want to be part of a trained volunteer pool are encouraged to review details and sign up ahead of time. Graduates often support neighborhood response teams or help during county‑wide emergencies.
Saturday in town: Lunar New Year and community dinner
The community events calendar for today is full, with a family‑friendly Lunar New Year celebration welcoming all ages, plus the North Whidbey Hearts & Hammers community dinner supporting local home‑repair efforts. Both are listed for this evening, giving residents several options to get out and connect.
Families can also look for youth basketball, a winter art workshop for kids, open swim at the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool, and a performance of the musical “Rent” at the local playhouse. Times and registration details vary, so it’s wise to double‑check the calendar before heading out.
City hall: Council schedule and participation
At City Hall, council meetings continue on their regular rhythm: the body meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers on Southeast Barrington Drive. That puts the next regular meeting on Tuesday, February 17, with agendas posted in advance for anyone who wants to follow along.
Residents can offer public comments at the start of regular meetings or follow specific items when public hearings are scheduled. Council materials and recordings are also available online, making it easier to track decisions on streets, utilities, and waterfront planning.
