Oakland, CA – February 22, 2026 – Black Joy Parade fills downtown, Black History Month events spotlight arts and film, and OMCA extends evening programs.
Oakland, CA – February 22, 2026 – Downtown fills with celebration today as the Black Joy Parade anchors a weekend of Black History Month events and extended museum hours across the city.
Black Joy Parade brings thousands downtown
The 9th Annual Black Joy Parade takes over downtown Oakland today, turning 14th Street and Broadway into a corridor of music, dance, and community pride. The free event features a midday procession followed by a sprawling festival zone with local performers, food, and more than 200 Black-owned vendors.
Organizers say the parade highlights joy and creativity in Oakland’s Black community, with families, community groups, and arts organizations marching together before the celebration continues into the evening around Broadway and Grand.
USF and community partners show up in support
The University of San Francisco’s Black Alumni Society and student groups plan to be on the ground at the parade, staffing booths and meeting with community members. Their presence is part of a monthlong series of Black History Month programs that includes Oakland faith visits, arts events, and talks focused on joy, legacy, and liberation.
The collaboration adds a strong college access and networking component to the celebration, connecting Oakland youth with alumni, resources, and campus opportunities as they explore the downtown festivities.
Film festival extends Black History Month into the night
Oakland is also preparing for its first Black History Film Festival, scheduled as an evening event this weekend. Organizers plan a six hour program of screenings tied to the city’s broader revitalization efforts, with a focus on showcasing work from Black filmmakers and bringing more cultural programming into neighborhood spaces.
The festival is expected to run into late evening, giving residents another way to close out the week of Black History Month activities with films, conversations, and community networking.
OMCA keeps the lights on for ThursDates
At the Oakland Museum of California, winter programming continues with its ThursDates series, billed as one of the city’s most creative night out options. The weekly evenings combine rotating performances, art activities, and food and drink from local partners, with a strong emphasis on Oakland based artists and DJs.
Current programming includes school performances and youth focused events tied to Black History Month, as well as exhibitions centered on Black spaces, California landscapes, and new work by Bay Area artists. Residents are encouraged to check the museum’s schedule for details on upcoming Thursday nights and closing dates for key shows.
Looking ahead
Together, the downtown parade, emerging film festival, and museum nights underscore how much of Oakland’s winter calendar is now devoted to cultural events, youth engagement, and celebrating Black history and creativity across the city.
