Oakland Weekend Roundup: First Fridays, Community Meals and Transit Alerts
Oakland, CA – March 8, 2026 – From First Fridays to community meal drives and transit alerts, Oakland saw a busy weekend across arts, service and rail.
Oakland wrapped up the first full weekend of March with a mix of arts, community service and transportation updates that kept residents on the move.
First Fridays Kicks Off 2026 Season
Oakland First Fridays returned March 6, marking the first street festival of 2026 along Telegraph Avenue in the KONO district. The five-block stretch between 22nd and 27th streets filled with local artists, food vendors and live performers from 5 to 9:30 p.m.
The monthly event, a staple of Oakland’s arts scene, brings thousands downtown and signals a busy spring season for small businesses and creatives. Organizers are planning continued monthly activations through the year.
Community Feed Serves Neighbors in Need
On Saturday, March 7, volunteers gathered at 2300 Brush Street for The City Eats Monthly Feed. The effort focused on distributing warm meals to Oakland residents experiencing food insecurity.
Organizers said volunteers of all ages participated in the two-hour outreach, helping hand out meals directly on city streets. The recurring event aims to strengthen neighborhood ties while addressing hunger in a hands-on way.
Capitol Corridor Train Delay Noted
Transit riders saw a brief disruption Thursday afternoon when Capitol Corridor Train 536 departed Oakland about five minutes behind schedule. Rail officials issued a delay notice and advised passengers to remain near boarding areas for updated departure estimates.
While minor, the alert was a reminder for commuters to monitor service updates closely as regional rail traffic picks up this spring.
New Art Exhibition Opens Downtown
A multi-artist exhibition also opened March 6 at Art@Archer on 13th Street. The free show features several Bay Area artists working across painting, mixed media and textile arts, and will run through April 25.
Together, the weekend’s events highlighted Oakland’s blend of creativity, civic engagement and everyday movement — a snapshot of the city in early March.
