Philadelphia Journalist Charged After SEPTA Bus Confrontation
Philadelphia, PA — February 1, 2026 — A former WHYY intern faces charges after a viral altercation on a SEPTA bus involving conservative influencer Frank Scales.
On January 19, 2026, Paulina Reyes, a 22-year-old former WHYY intern and Community College of Philadelphia student, was involved in a heated incident with Frank Scales, founder of Surge Philly, on a SEPTA bus. The confrontation escalated when Reyes allegedly pepper-sprayed Scales after calling him a “fascist” and attempting to seize his phone. The incident was captured in a viral video, leading to misdemeanor charges against Reyes for simple assault and possession of an instrument of crime.
The case is being prosecuted by special prosecutor Michael Untermeyer, a role established to handle SEPTA-related incidents amid tensions with District Attorney Larry Krasner. Attorney General David Sunday emphasized that political violence is unacceptable, stating, “This case is a reminder that violence will not be tolerated as a means to conduct political debate, protest, or exhibit differences.”
Scales, known as a right-wing provocateur, claims he was filming the encounter for his safety. Reyes and Scales previously attended the same college. In the aftermath, Reyes’ supporters raised over $4,000 via GoFundMe, highlighting her financial and emotional distress. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March.
