Philadelphia still cleaning up after June 22 storms that flooded streets and felled trees

Philadelphia PA – Heavy rain and wind during the evening of Monday, June 22 led to localized flooding and downed tree limbs across parts of the city. In a June 24 update, the City says cleanup and resident/business outreach are still underway—especially in Northwest Philadelphia communities—and provides specific ways to report remaining problems.

What the City says it’s still doing after the June 22 storm

The City of Philadelphia says departments coordinated through the City’s Emergency Operations Center as the storm moved through the region. Ahead of and during the severe weather, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) issued eight ReadyPhiladelphia alerts warning subscribers about conditions including heavy rainfall, lightning, and flash flooding.

In the hours after the storm, City teams reviewed multiple locations where flooding was reported, including 21st Street and Godfrey Avenue, 10th Street and Godfrey Avenue, 11th Street and Godfrey Avenue, Wister Street and Godfrey Avenue, and Ogontz Avenue and East Washington Lane. The City also says residual storm debris was identified at 10th and Godfrey, 11th and Godfrey, and 21st and Godfrey, and that crews referred cleanup and debris-removal work to Streets and Sanitation.

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) also reports that rainfall intensity temporarily exceeded local sewer system capacity in some locations, causing water to back up into streets and some basements before conditions improved.

Storm impact snapshot: tree emergencies and work orders

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation says that, since June 22, there have been 109 unique tree emergencies across the city. Of those, 99 involved the “Right of Way”—including trees blocking roads and sidewalks, and public street trees fallen onto cars and buildings. Another 10 were “park tree emergencies,” involving trees fallen in the interior of Parks & Recreation properties such as parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers.

Parks & Recreation also reports creating 65 work orders for tree or limb removal since June 22. The City’s message is that this is still part of the recovery phase: staff say in-house tree crews will keep clearing trees off roads, cars, and houses, and clearing trees from Parks & Recreation properties where programming is scheduled to happen this week.

Where residents should report storm damage (and which number to use)

The City’s June 24 guidance separates “reporting” from “resolution”—meaning residents may be triaged based on what City teams find and what resources are available. The City also emphasizes that one reporting tool is not a guarantee.

• Private property damage: Complete the secure Damage Reporter Survey for storm-related damage. The City says the information collected will be used to determine areas and the extent of incident-related damages. The City also says the survey “is not an application for resources and does not guarantee assistance.” Residents can also complete the survey by calling 3-1-1.
• Downed trees: Report to 911 if a tree is blocking a road or on a house; report to PECO if it’s on electrical lines; report to 3-1-1 for removal.
• Blocked or damaged sewer inlets: Report to PWD’s 24-hour emergency line at 215-685-6300.
• Other City service requests: Use 311, the 3-1-1 mobile app, and Philadelphia’s Neighborhood Community Action Centers.
• Life-safety emergencies: 9-1-1 should be contacted whenever there is an immediate life-safety or emergency concern.

The City also says it’s continuing to deliver storm recovery updates through ReadyPhiladelphia and a dedicated text-message platform for recovery messages.

Weather record: NWS documents Philadelphia flooding and downed limbs

The National Weather Service’s Preliminary Local Storm Report for the June 22 event includes multiple entries tied to Philadelphia reporting both tree damage and flooded roadways.

For example, around 6:04 p.m., the NWS report includes a tree limb entry describing a limb fell on a vehicle near the intersection of Jeanes Street and Arthur Street (Fox Chase). The NWS also reports a large tree limb down near Rockwell Ave and Conard Street (Fox Chase).

The report also includes a flash flood entry around 6:30 p.m. describing fast-flowing water and flooded streets in the Germantown area, including reports of basements flooded along Godfrey Avenue. Additional entries include a flooded roadway reported near the intersection of Bristol Pike and Mill Road around 7:00 p.m.

What to watch next

As of June 24, the City is still in cleanup and assessment mode. If you still have storm hazards—especially downed trees, street flooding, or blocked sewer inlets—report them using the right channel above rather than assuming earlier cleanup means everything is finished.
