Phoenix Daily Brief: Deadly south Phoenix struggle, early heat wave, trash-fee proposal
Phoenix, AZ – February 24, 2026 – A deadly police struggle, an early mini heat wave, a proposed trash-fee hike, and speed cameras returning citywide.
1) South Phoenix struggle ends with one man dead
Police say officers responded Monday night near 15th Avenue and Atlanta Avenue after a report that a man was pointing a gun at his daughters. During a struggle, officers say the man fell and the gun discharged, killing him and grazing an officer. The officer was treated and released.
2) Early heat wave: Phoenix eyes the first 90 of the year
Forecasters say a ridge of high pressure will push temperatures sharply higher, with Phoenix expected to hit 90 degrees by Thursday, February 26. A stretch of heat alerts is slated from Thursday through Monday, with reminders to hydrate, use sunscreen, and be cautious on exposed trails and at outdoor sports events.
3) Trash pickup fees could rise over three years
City staff are recommending a multi-year increase in monthly garbage collection fees that would total nearly 50% for many households. The proposal is framed as a way to cover rising costs and avoid service cuts in a system that serves more than 400,000 customers. A council vote is expected in April, and officials warned that delaying action past July could force reductions in collection and disposal services.
4) Speed cameras are back, with warnings first
Phoenix has begun activating photo speed enforcement again for the first time since 2019. The rollout includes 17 speed enforcement cameras across the city, with a 30-day warning period starting February 23 and citations expected to begin March 25. City transportation officials say most devices focus on major corridors, with others rotating through school zones.
