Phoenix secures $9.5M+ in federal funding for safety and infrastructure
The city announced more than $9.5 million in federal earmarked funding for fiscal year 2026, aimed at a mix of public-safety upgrades and infrastructure work. Plans include airport-side improvements, new equipment to help crews handle electric-vehicle battery fires, and added wellness resources for first responders.
City leaders framed the package as a practical boost for day-to-day operations: smoother airfield logistics, faster and safer emergency response, and better support for the people doing that work.
Record-setting heat arrives early (and it is not done yet)
Phoenix officially logged its first 90-degree day of 2026 at Sky Harbor, far earlier than the typical late-March timing. Forecasters said highs in the low-to-mid 90s could threaten daily records through the weekend, with warmer-than-usual overnight lows limiting the usual cool-down.
For residents, that means rethinking outdoor plans, checking pets and neighbors, and staying mindful of hydration, especially during afternoon errands and youth sports.
Weekend freeway closures and ramp restrictions (Feb. 27–March 2)
Transportation officials posted a weekend advisory calling out multiple metro Phoenix closures and restrictions tied to ongoing improvement projects. One marquee item: a stretch of eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in Gilbert scheduled to close late Friday through midday Sunday, along with several eastbound on-ramps.
Other ramp restrictions are also expected in northeast Phoenix. If you can, build in extra time and use alternate routes.
Downtown high-rise evacuated briefly after reports of smoke
Fire crews responded to a downtown high-rise near Central Avenue and Monroe Street after reports of smoke on an upper floor. Officials said residents on the affected floor were evacuated as crews searched, and people were later allowed back inside. No injuries were reported.
