Phoenix Daily Local Brief: Federal gunfire call, heat plan updates, and Broadway Curve closures
Phoenix, AZ – February 26, 2026 – DEA agents came under fire in west Phoenix; the city expanded cooling options, and I-10 saw overnight closures.
Top story: Shots fired during federal investigation
Authorities say a suspect opened fire on federal drug agents during a narcotics investigation in west Phoenix near 67th Avenue and Van Buren Street. No agents were reported injured. Two people were taken into custody, and investigators said drugs and a weapon were seized. The case remained active Wednesday, with state investigators expected to handle the follow-up.
Heat readiness: More cooling options as temperatures climb early
Phoenix approved its 2026 heat response plan as near-record February heat settles into the Valley. The plan expands access to cooling spaces, including longer hours at some library locations and a return of a 24/7 cooling site downtown at 20 W. Jackson Street. City officials say last year brought hundreds of heat-related deaths countywide, and the updated plan aims to reach people most at risk, including those without reliable indoor cooling.
Traffic watch: Overnight I-10 slowdowns at the Broadway Curve
If you travel I-10 near the Broadway Curve, expect overnight interruptions. Transportation officials said eastbound and westbound I-10 between 48th Street and Broadway Road could see intermittent closures of up to 15 minutes at a time from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday nights (Feb. 24–25), ending early Thursday (Feb. 26), to support utility pole and overhead line work.
Downtown: New police e-bikes ahead of a big spring event
In a separate public-safety update, the city announced ten new electric bikes for downtown patrols, aimed at helping officers move quickly through busy corridors, garages, parks, and other areas where cars are less practical. The rollout comes as downtown gears up for the NCAA Women’s Final Four in early April, with organizers planning a slate of free, family-friendly events around the games.
