Plainfield’s certified population is 49,962 after special census

Plainfield’s certified 2025 special-census population is 49,962 residents, leaving the village 38 people short of 50,000 and giving local officials an updated population basis for revenue estimates and municipal planning.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s official count lists 17,329 housing units in Plainfield. The full special census used September 1, 2025, as its special-census day, or reference date. The federal record was revised June 8, 2026.

Plainfield added 5,200 residents since 2020

The certified total is 5,200 residents higher than the 2020 Census figure cited by the Village of Plainfield. That is an 11.6% increase, according to the village’s results announcement.

Plainfield has not officially crossed the 50,000-resident mark. The certified special-census result establishes the village’s current official count at 49,962.

Village cites funding and planning implications

The Village of Plainfield said it requested the special census to reflect growth since 2020 and improve the population basis used for state and federal funding, public safety, infrastructure and other municipal services.

Village officials told The Plainfield Enterprise that the updated count is expected to produce approximately $1.2 million in additional annual state-shared revenue through certification of the 2030 decennial census. That amount is an estimate from local officials, not an independently calculated Census Bureau figure.

The certification does not specify how any additional revenue will be spent. It also does not, by itself, create a new service, legal status or particular funding formula for Plainfield. Future budgets and policy decisions will determine whether and how the village uses any change in available revenue.

What changes for residents

For residents, the immediate change is the availability of a newer official population and housing baseline. Plainfield can use that information as it evaluates public safety, roads and other infrastructure, staffing, service capacity and long-term development needs.

The certified special-census count should be distinguished from the Census Bureau’s separate population-estimate series. QuickFacts lists a July 1, 2025, population estimate of 50,043, while the certified 49,962 figure comes from the village’s full special census and uses September 1, 2025, as its reference date. Those figures are different products with different reference dates.

Plainfield now has an updated municipal count ahead of the 2030 federal census. The certification documents continued growth while leaving the village just short of 50,000 residents.
