Port Orchard commuters face a months-long Sedgwick Road closure

Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians using Sedgwick Road/SR 160 in the Port Orchard area are navigating a months-long closure that began at 11 p.m. June 13, 2026.

The Washington State Department of Transportation closed the state route between Blackberry Hill Lane Southeast and Long Lake Road Southeast to build a new bridge over Salmonberry Creek. WSDOT expects the closure to remain in place through the end of October 2026, but that is a planned endpoint rather than a guaranteed reopening date.

Detours differ by travel mode

Vehicle traffic is directed around the closure using Jackson Avenue Southeast, Southeast Salmonberry Road and Long Lake Road Southeast. WSDOT says side streets between Jackson Avenue Southeast and Long Lake Road Southeast remain accessible for local traffic where signs allow.

People walking or bicycling should follow the separate signed route through Phillips Road Southeast, Southeast Salmonberry Road, Long Lake Road Southeast and Lakeview Drive Southeast. Side streets between Phillips Road Southeast and Long Lake Road Southeast remain accessible for local traffic where posted signs permit.

The closed segment itself is not open to through traffic. Travelers should follow the signed routes rather than rely on the normal SR 160 alignment.

Bridge work comes before the stream restoration

The immediate closure is for construction of a replacement bridge over Salmonberry Creek. The work is part of WSDOT’s project to remove fish-passage barriers beneath state highways in Kitsap County.

After the roadway work is completed and travel lanes reopen, WSDOT plans to return in summer 2027. That future phase is expected to include removal of the existing culvert, additional stream work and construction of a more natural creek bed to improve fish passage.

The project is not scheduled to keep Sedgwick Road closed throughout 2027. WSDOT’s current plan calls for the travel-lane work to be completed in 2026, followed by culvert and stream work during the 2027 fish window.

Southworth access and transit context

SR 160 is the primary access route between SR 16 and the Southworth Ferry Terminal, according to WSDOT corridor planning material. That makes the closure relevant to ferry travelers, local residents and regional commuters using the South Kitsap corridor.

Kitsap Transit’s Route 186 connects the Port Orchard Ferry Dock, Port Orchard Armory Park & Ride, Mile Hill, Manchester, South Colby and Southworth Ferry. The route page lists a schedule effective May 2, 2026. Route 186 is transit context, not a confirmed replacement or reroute for the closed roadway, so riders should check current Kitsap Transit alerts and schedules before traveling.

Drivers should follow posted detour signs and allow additional time for trips toward Southworth. Ferry travelers should also verify current Washington State Ferries information before departure.
