Port Upgrades, Housing Approval and Stormwater Funding Lead Long Beach Agenda
Long Beach, CA – March 30, 2026 – City leaders advance port upgrades, approve new housing, and fund stormwater fixes shaping the city’s economy.
Long Beach is closing out March with several significant decisions affecting infrastructure, housing and economic development.
Port Modernization Moves Forward
Harbor commissioners this week advanced a major terminal upgrade project designed to improve cargo flow and reduce emissions at the Port of Long Beach. The plan includes expanded on-dock rail capacity and additional electric cargo-handling equipment.
Port officials say the improvements are aimed at strengthening supply chain reliability while meeting the city’s clean air goals. The investment comes as cargo volumes show signs of stabilizing after several volatile years for West Coast shipping.
City Council Approves New Housing Development
The Long Beach City Council also approved a multi-story mixed-use housing project near a transit corridor, adding hundreds of new units to the city’s pipeline. A portion of the development will be set aside for below-market-rate housing.
City leaders framed the project as part of Long Beach’s broader housing strategy to meet state production targets and ease rental pressure. The development will include ground-floor commercial space, with supporters saying it supports walkability and small business growth.
Stormwater and Infrastructure Funding Secured
In a separate vote, councilmembers authorized funding for stormwater system upgrades in flood-prone neighborhoods. The improvements include upgraded pump stations and green infrastructure designed to capture and filter runoff.
Public works officials noted that recent winter storms underscored the need for long-term resilience investments. The projects are expected to reduce localized flooding and improve water quality before runoff reaches local beaches.
Economic and Environmental Focus
Together, the port investment, housing approval and stormwater funding reflect the city’s balancing act: supporting economic growth while addressing climate resilience and affordability. With budget planning for the next fiscal year already underway, additional infrastructure and housing proposals are expected in the coming months.
