Big gator draws attention in Burnt Store Isles

Punta Gorda police shared photos Saturday of a large alligator lounging in the Burnt Store Isles neighborhood, after residents spotted it sunbathing in a yard. Officers monitored the situation and reported that the gator eventually returned to the water on its own. It is another reminder that winter is still active season for wildlife along the canals and ponds around town.

Wildlife experts generally urge people to keep a safe distance from alligators, avoid feeding them, and call authorities only if an animal appears aggressive or trapped. Neighbors were more amused than alarmed this time, but officials continue to stress that even calm-looking animals can move quickly if approached.

I-75 disruption near Jones Loop Road

Travel was snarled north of Punta Gorda this afternoon after a vehicle fire shut down the northbound lanes of I-75 at Jones Loop Road in Charlotte County. Regional traffic reports warned drivers to expect major delays while fire and road crews worked the scene and traffic was diverted around the closure.

If you are heading toward Fort Myers or points north late tonight or early Sunday, it is still a good idea to check a live traffic map or navigation app before getting on the interstate, in case any residual congestion or lane restrictions remain in the area.

City to weigh tighter rules on bike parking

Punta Gorda’s long-running debate over where bicycles and ebikes can be locked is heading back to City Council. At an upcoming Wednesday meeting, council members are expected to vote on an ordinance that would prohibit locking bikes to trees, signs, railings, building fixtures and other city infrastructure, except for designated racks.

The proposal would allow police to issue fines and, after a written warning and 24-hour grace period, impound a bicycle that remains chained in a prohibited spot. Some cyclists say the measure feels excessive in a community that encourages riding to restaurants, festivals and the Harborwalk, while others argue it is needed to keep sidewalks and public spaces clear.

Weekend around town

Today’s community calendar was packed, from the Princess Classic Gymnastics Tournament at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center to the Burnt Store Colony annual flea market along Burnt Store Road, plus a variety of sales and anniversary events at local shops.
