Richmond school board trims FY27 budget to close $4M gap, keep summer school

Richmond Public Schools unanimously approved another round of FY27 budget cuts on June 2, moving to close a $4 million gap after city funding came in below what the district had requested.

The plan includes a closure path for Richmond Virtual Academy and lower pay rates for teachers who cover classes or lose planning periods, changes intended to help the district balance the budget before the new fiscal year begins July 1.

Even with those cuts, summer school remains funded and is still scheduled to begin June 8. That gives families a clear answer heading into next week, especially those planning around the program.

The budget picture is not necessarily finished. Richmond Public Schools says later state funding changes before July 1 could still alter the district’s final numbers or prompt another review.
