Sacramento Local Headlines: Freeway gunfire, deadly shooting, budget gap
Sacramento, CA – March 5, 2026 – Sacramento tracks freeway gunfire investigation, a major City Hall budget gap, and a downtown barricade shooting.
Here’s what Sacramento residents were waking up to on Thursday, with public safety and City Hall decisions competing for attention.
Freeway gunfire: investigation expands
Investigators say a string of shootings on Sacramento-area freeways Wednesday morning led to major traffic disruptions and at least one injured driver. Authorities said a suspect has been arrested as they work to confirm how many reports are connected and where the shots were fired.
Officials have urged anyone who witnessed the incidents or has dashcam footage to share it with investigators.
Deadly neighborhood shooting ends with a detention, not yet an arrest
Sacramento police said an adult man was found shot to death Wednesday night in the 2800 block of Grasslands Drive. Police reported a suspect was believed to be inside a nearby home, prompting crisis negotiators and armored vehicles to respond. A suspect was detained late Wednesday, but police said a homicide arrest had not yet been made as detectives worked the case.
City Hall: budget talks start early with a $66.2M gap
The Sacramento City Council has begun early work sessions aimed at closing a projected $66.2 million deficit for the 2026–27 budget. City staff framed the shortfall as a structural mismatch between rising costs and revenues, with departments asked to model reductions while leaders also weigh ongoing revenue options. The city manager is expected to release a proposed balanced budget by the end of April, with adoption targeted for early June.
Neighborhood notes: seniors housing, safer crossings, and small-arts support
In Oak Park, construction is underway on the 67-unit Donner Field Senior Apartments at 3311 45th St., with a portion of units reserved for seniors experiencing homelessness and supportive services planned on site. Separately, the city approved pedestrian-safety upgrades at four high-injury intersections, including rapid-flashing beacons and accessibility improvements. The city also announced more than $98,000 in operating grants for 25 small arts and cultural groups across Sacramento County.
