San Diego Daily Local Briefing
San Diego, CA – February 19, 2026 – Stormy skies, weather alerts, and science growth shape today’s San Diego headlines across the region.
San Diego, CA – February 19, 2026 – Stormy weather, safety alerts, and big science investments are setting the tone across the county today.
Final round of storms brings rain, wind and flooding concerns
Forecasters say San Diego County is seeing a ‘final round’ of showers and intense winds today as the third storm in a series moves through. Light to moderate rain is expected across much of the region, with ponding on roads and minor street flooding possible in urban areas. Along mountain crests and nearby desert slopes, west winds could be strong and potentially damaging, with advisories in place into early Friday.
Thunderstorms could bring brief downpours, stronger gusts and small hail before conditions gradually dry out and calm heading into the weekend.
Thunderstorm and wind alerts follow earlier severe cells
The latest system arrives on the heels of severe thunderstorm activity that moved across northwestern parts of the county early Wednesday. A warning issued overnight highlighted 60 mph wind gusts, torrential rain and the risk of flash flooding, hail damage and downed trees. Residents were urged to move to interior rooms, avoid driving through flooded roadways and stay alert to rapidly changing conditions.
Earlier in the week, another Pacific storm delivered heavy rain, high surf, mountain snow and powerful winds to coastal and inland neighborhoods. Gusts strong enough to topple trees caused scattered power outages and some property damage, while snow piled up in higher elevations under a winter weather advisory.
Novartis expansion underscores San Diego’s life science strength
Amid the unsettled weather, San Diego’s innovation economy is getting a major boost. Novartis has announced plans for a large biomedical research center in the city, part of a multibillion dollar US investment in research and manufacturing. The new facility is expected to house around a thousand employees and focus on drug discovery in areas such as neuroscience, oncology and regenerative medicine.
The project reinforces San Diego’s status as a global life sciences hub, adding to the critical mass of biotech, academic and technology partners already clustered around the region’s research corridors.
Science community gathers in La Jolla
Complementing that growth, researchers are in town this week for an international conference on biophysics in drug discovery in La Jolla. The meeting brings together industry and academic scientists to share advances in tools and methods that help design better medicines, further spotlighting the region’s role at the intersection of research and real world therapies.
