San Diego Daily Local Headlines: Section 8, Balboa Park Parking, Protests, and More
San Diego, CA – March 3, 2026 – Section 8 waitlists tighten, Balboa Park adds more resident free parking, and a Santee crash is investigated.
Housing
Section 8 waitlists close across much of the region
Rental assistance is getting harder to access across San Diego County as multiple housing authorities pause or close their Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waitlists. Encinitas recently said it will stop pulling new households from its list, joining earlier moves by the City of San Diego and the county to close their larger waitlists.
Local officials and housing advocates point to rents rising faster than federal funding, forcing agencies to slow down issuing new vouchers even as demand grows. The result is longer waits for families who rely on vouchers to stay housed in the private rental market.

Balboa Park expands free parking for verified city residents
The city’s Balboa Park paid-parking rollout continues to evolve. Updated guidance says verified City of San Diego residents can park for free in Level 2 and Level 3 lots once they register and confirm residency through the city’s online portal. Paid parking remains in the busiest Level 1 lots, and meter rules within and near the park still apply.
If you’re heading to the park soon, the key takeaway is that the discount/free options require advance verification tied to your license plate, and processing can take time during busy periods.
