Powerful storms hammer San Diego County
San Diego is in the middle of a volatile winter pattern, with rounds of heavy rain, strong winds and mountain snow expected through at least Thursday. Forecasters say the first storm brought widespread downpours Monday, triggering traffic spinouts, minor flooding and a surge in emergency calls across the county.
A second, stronger wave of rain and high winds is expected late Tuesday into Wednesday, with additional showers possible Thursday. Coastal and valley areas could pick up one to two inches of rain this week, with higher totals in the foothills. Wind advisories are in effect for much of the county, and saturated ground raises the risk of downed trees and power outages.
Snow levels are forecast to drop to around 3,500–4,000 feet by midweek, bringing hazardous travel over mountain passes and the potential for light snow accumulations along Interstate 8. Residents in flood-prone neighborhoods are being urged to use sandbags, clear gutters and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
Region braces for colder, wetter days
Regional outlooks show the Tijuana–San Diego area staying cool and unsettled through midweek, with a sharp drop in temperatures accompanying the storms. Daytime highs are expected to linger in the low to mid-60s, with brisk coastal winds and chilly nights.
Forecasters note that the most intense rainfall is likely through Tuesday night, but lingering showers and gusty conditions could still disrupt outdoor plans later in the week. High surf and rough seas remain concerns along local beaches, and river levels will be closely watched, especially along the San Diego River through Mission Valley.
County supervisor presses for fraud safeguards
Amid the storm coverage, county leaders are also turning attention to oversight. Supervisor Jim Desmond has requested a public briefing on how San Diego County detects and responds to fraud in social service programs, following high-profile scandal cases elsewhere in California. The goal is to review existing safeguards, identify any weak spots and reassure the public that taxpayer funds are being closely monitored.
North Park landmark gets a new life
In brighter neighborhood news, the iconic two-story building in North Park that once housed Urban Solace is preparing to welcome Bacari, a Mediterranean-inspired small plates restaurant. The concept, which made its name in Los Angeles, is planning its first San Diego location in the historic space, bringing shareable dishes and a wine-bar feel to the busy commercial corridor.
The opening will add another destination to North Park’s dining scene and breathe new life into a building long associated with the neighborhood’s modern restaurant boom.
