Warehouse Project Moves Forward at Former Drive-In

The Santee City Council has approved plans to redevelop the former Santee Drive-In property into a large warehouse and distribution facility. The decision followed a lengthy public discussion, with residents voicing both support and concern.

City officials say the project is expected to bring new jobs and long-term tax revenue. To address neighborhood worries, conditions were added limiting overnight operations and requiring traffic and noise mitigation measures. The iconic drive-in sign is expected to be preserved and relocated within the city.

Court Halts Fanita Ranch Housing Development

In a separate development, a San Diego Superior Court ruling this week stopped progress on the proposed Fanita Ranch housing project in north Santee. The project would have added nearly 3,000 homes in a high fire-risk area.

The court found the project’s environmental review did not fully address wildfire evacuation and safety concerns. The ruling marks the latest chapter in a long-running legal and political battle over the site, which has faced opposition from environmental groups and nearby residents.

Traffic Signal Upgrades Underway Across the City

Drivers may notice changes at several major intersections around Santee. The city has begun installing flashing yellow left-turn signals at five locations, a project that started in late January and continues this week.

The upgrades are intended to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes by giving drivers more flexibility when turning left. City officials say additional intersections could be upgraded in the future if the changes prove effective.
