Seattle Lawmakers Advance Millionaires Tax; Renton Fire Displaces Families; Foster Care Reform Moves Forward
It’s been a busy stretch in Seattle and Olympia, with major policy votes and a deadly fire drawing attention across the region.
Millionaires Tax Clears Key Hurdle
Washington’s proposed tax on high earners moved forward this week after clearing the state Senate. Supporters say the measure would generate new revenue for public services, including education and childcare. Opponents argue it could push wealthy residents and businesses out of state.
The proposal now heads to the House, where debate is expected to focus on how the funds would be spent and whether the policy could face legal challenges. The vote marks one of the most significant tax shifts considered in recent years.
Deadly Renton Condo Fire Displaces Families
A deadly condo fire in Renton left multiple families without homes and prompted a large emergency response. Fire crews battled heavy flames and smoke, and several residents were forced to evacuate in the middle of the night.
Investigators are working to determine the cause. Community organizations have stepped in to assist displaced residents with temporary shelter and basic necessities as the recovery begins.
Foster Care Benefits Reform Advances
In Olympia, lawmakers unanimously approved a bill that would end the practice of intercepting federal benefits from young adults in extended foster care. The change would allow 18- to 21-year-olds to keep those funds as they transition to independent living.
Advocates say the reform could provide a critical financial cushion for housing, education and daily expenses. If enacted, the policy would mark a meaningful shift in how the state supports youth aging out of the foster system.
