Sedalia daily brief: ballot set, Route Y crash, weekend memorials
Here is a quick look at what is shaping the conversation in Sedalia as the first full weekend of February gets underway.
City sets 2026 municipal ballot
The city has released its list of candidates for the April 2026 municipal election. Voters will choose between two contenders for mayor, along with contested races in every council ward. The announcement gives residents time to learn where each candidate stands before absentee voting begins and campaign signs start to appear around town.
Who is on the ballot
Two names are set to appear on the mayoral line, while Ward 1 will see separate one-year and two-year contests. Wards 2, 3, and 4 all feature two-person races as well. The full slate means most Sedalians will see competitive local choices when they head to the polls this spring.
Three seriously hurt in Route Y crash west of town
State troopers are investigating a three-vehicle collision on Route Y near Van Natta Road that left a young woman and two teenagers with serious injuries late Wednesday night. Reports indicate one westbound car attempted to pass another as they approached a hill, striking an oncoming vehicle and triggering a secondary impact. All three drivers were taken to hospitals in Columbia and Kansas City for treatment.
The crash shut down part of the highway while crews cleared the scene. Investigators say all three vehicles were heavily damaged, and it is not yet clear whether seat belts were in use.
Funeral announcements share upcoming local services
This weekend also brings several chances for friends and neighbors to pay their respects to longtime Sedalians. Local funeral homes have announced services and visitations for residents in their 80s and 90s, with gatherings scheduled at chapels, a city church, and cemeteries in the area. Families are inviting the community to attend, remember shared stories, and support one another.
Looking ahead
Between traffic safety concerns and a full city ballot, civic life is front and center heading into the week. Residents who want to stay involved can follow city election updates, watch for any additional traffic advisories along Route Y, and check local listings for detailed service times and locations.
