Sheboygan drivers face overlapping road closures as summer work continues
Sheboygan has several active road projects affecting travel on the south, central and north sides as of August 4, 2026. The Erie Avenue, North 25th Street and Wilgus Road intersection was scheduled to reopen after August 3, restoring northbound and southbound traffic on North 25th Street and access to Wilgus Road. The broader Erie Avenue restriction remains in place, while Clara Avenue-area and north-side projects continue.
What changed at Erie Avenue
After August 3, the Erie Avenue/North 25th Street/Wilgus Road intersection was scheduled to reopen to northbound and southbound North 25th Street traffic and to provide access to Wilgus Road. That milestone does not mean the Erie Avenue corridor has fully reopened.
Erie Avenue remains closed to through traffic between North Taylor Drive and North 19th Street. Local properties and residences generally remain accessible during construction, but the city says driveway access may be prohibited for limited periods during pavement removal, new concrete-base work and asphalt paving. Crews are expected to coordinate those temporary closures with affected residents.
The Erie Avenue project is tentatively scheduled for completion in October. The timing is weather-dependent and may change.
Clara Avenue-area work continues on the south side
South-side construction includes storm-sewer improvements, new crosswalks, curb and gutter repairs, pavement milling and asphalt paving. The city notice describes work on Clara Avenue between South 14th and South 17th streets, along with a through-traffic closure on Mead Avenue between South 14th Street and North 7th Street. A temporary truck-route detour is posted for the Clara Avenue block between South 8th and South 7th streets.
Truck traffic on that block is directed through South 8th Street, Broadway and South 7th Street back to Clara Avenue. Residences in the construction area generally retain access, but driveway access may be unavailable briefly during pavement removals and concrete placement.
The Clara Avenue-area work is tentatively scheduled for completion by the end of August, subject to weather and changing construction conditions.
North-side closures remain in place
Ontario Avenue is closed to through traffic from North 12th Street to South 10th Street. North 11th Street and North 12th Street are closed between Ontario Avenue and Erie Avenue.
The work includes storm-sewer improvements, a new crosswalk at North 11th Street, curb and gutter repairs, pavement milling and asphalt paving. The city has not posted a detour for these three street closures.
Residences in the work area generally remain accessible, although the city warns that driveway access may be interrupted for limited periods during pavement removal and concrete placement. The north-side work is tentatively scheduled for completion by the end of August.
What drivers and residents should expect
The projects have different reopening windows. The August 3 Erie intersection milestone restored a specific North 25th Street and Wilgus Road connection, but Erie Avenue itself remains restricted between North Taylor Drive and North 19th Street.
Drivers should avoid closed sections, follow posted instructions and slow down in work zones. Residents should expect generally maintained local access but should not assume that every driveway will be continuously available while crews remove pavement, place concrete or lay asphalt. All schedules and traffic impacts remain subject to weather and construction conditions.
Clara Avenue-area work and the Ontario, North 11th and North 12th Street projects are tentatively targeted for completion by the end of August. Erie Avenue work is tentatively scheduled to continue into October.
