Snellville Daily Brief: February 7, 2026
First responders honored for saving teen
A 17-year-old from Snellville is alive today thanks to fast work by Gwinnett County firefighters and paramedics who responded when he went into cardiac arrest in September. A local hospital recognized the five-member crew this week as First Friday Heroes for their coordinated response and successful resuscitation.
The teen had stopped breathing before crews arrived, but family members had already started CPR. Firefighters took over life-saving efforts on scene and continued treatment en route to the hospital, where the teen ultimately recovered. The recognition is a reminder of how critical early CPR and quick 911 calls can be during medical emergencies.
City advancing long-term trash and recycling contract
City leaders are continuing work on a major overhaul of Snellville’s commercial and residential trash and recycling contract. A formal bid request issued in early January outlines plans for vendors to handle citywide solid waste and recycling service, including curbside pickup and support for the city’s recycling center.
The package calls for sealed bids, a mandatory pre-bid meeting at City Hall, and the option for follow-up interviews with haulers before a final recommendation goes to the mayor and council. The process will shape service levels, pricing, and recycling options for residents and businesses over the next several years.
Busy weekend of events around town
Snellville’s weekend calendar is packed, with a string of Galentine’s Day celebrations, a writers workshop at Centerville Community Center, and a women’s empowerment conference on Montclair Way. The Snellville branch library is also hosting an afternoon board and visioning session aimed at helping residents map out personal and professional goals.
Along Scenic Highway, shoppers can find a Mardi Gras-themed food pop-up inside the mall, featuring New Orleans-style dishes and live jazz and brass music. Evening options include plant-themed bingo, ladies’ night gatherings, and a classic rock show at a local restaurant, giving residents plenty of ways to close out the first full weekend of February.
What’s next at City Hall
City Hall stays busy next week, with a work session and council meeting set for Monday, February 9. A Snellville Youth Council session follows on February 12, giving students a chance to learn how local government works and to share ideas with city staff. Later in the month, the Downtown Development Authority will meet to continue discussions about growth in and around The Grove at Towne Center.
